Beneath the Fire is a compelling short-film made by Thin Skin Films. The story is about three young men who are celebrating their graduation day in a clearing. When one of them accidentally sets fire to a hedgehog, the others try to make him end its suffering. Forced to prove himself, he finds himself caught between the loyalty of the group and his own moral compass (this description is taken from IMDB).
To bring forth the subtext and many layers of the story, I wanted to create something that felt raw, slightly dark– and also kinda 90’s (when the movie is set). The cutouts, blue tint and font all work together to create a subtle 90’s feel, while the cutouts also also created a layered surface where we could give glimpses into the movie using old newspaper articles and photos from the film (to clarify that this is not an animated film).
